Engaging for Success, MacLeod Review

The link from engagement to performance is proven

The 2009 MacLeod Report* to the UK government indicates that significant performance benefits are being achieved through high engagement. Research indicates that:

  • Amongst 23,910 business units, top quartile engagement scores were associated with 12% higher customer advocacy, 18% higher customer productivity and 12% higher profitability (Gallup, 2006)
  • Amongst 89 companies, top quartile engagement companies had 2.6 times higher EPS growth rate (Gallup, 2006)
  • Amongst 50 companies from around the world, with a total of 664,000 employees, those that engaged employees most improved operating income by 19.2% while those that engaged least declined 32.7% (Towers Perrin, 2006).

There’s room for massive improvement:

  • Only 3 in 10 of UK employees are actively engaged in their work (CIPD, YouGov/TUC)
  • 12% of UK public service staff are highly engaged and 22% are actively disengaged (Towers Perrin)
  • 42% of employees would refuse to recommend their organisation as an employer to friends and family (Accor)
  • The cost of disengagement to the UK economy is estimated at £59.4-64.7 billion (Gallup).
